By now, you know that creating your company’s presence in Google’s business listings is imperative. Your company simply needs a My Business page. For your convenience, we have created a straightforward set of instructions to get you started.

Step 1: Add My Business Listing

Navigate to Google My Business (, then click Start Now.

This takes you to a map, as shown in the image below. Type the name of your business into the search box in the upper left. You should see a result similar to the this…

If the search tool successfully finds your business, click the name to claim it as yours. If, on the other hand, it does not find your business…then you will need to add the listing manually. In this case, click Add your business.

Step 2: Provide the Details for Your Business Page

On the next screen, take a moment to fill out all of the pertinent details.

You will note there is an option to select Yes or No to the question “I deliver goods and services to my customers at their location.” As a professional, it is possible you provide services outside your office; however, your work is primarily conducted in an office. In this case, therefore, you will want to check No. Then click Continue.

Step 3: Confirm Your Business Information

The next window asks you to verify the information provided. Be sure to check the box confirming I am authorized to manage this business and agree to the Terms of Service, then click Continue.

Step 4: Select the Method to Verify Your Business

Now select your verification method. It’s very likely the only available option is by “Snail Mail.” Unfortunately, there is often no faster method available. Click Mail.

Step 5: Send Postcard and Wait to Verify Your Business Page

Finally, you will see the window shown below. Your company name and address should be filled in by default. If you wish, you may also include a name in the Attn: field by entering it into the box below the envelope. Click Send postcard.

Assuming all went well, you should see the following confirmation message. Expect to receive your postcard in approximately 1-2 weeks, including final verification instructions. Click Continue.

Now all you have to do is wait! Take the tour, if you like. Skip it, if you prefer. We won’t cover the tour here.

While you wait to verify your My Business listing, you can update the details of your page as appropriate, add images, etc. We will provide guidance for how to go about verifying your listing in a future post.
